SLOW GLOWS - Stargaze Rock'n Roll LP (2019)
The term "hard-working band" isn't always appreciated as a descriptor for a band, but I think that it's apt in the case of SLOW GLOWS. They've been going for three or four years, steadily growing and building upon their sound. After some EP's, two 7"s, and a live release, this is their first proper full-length (which is also available on vinyl). And as the kids say today, "it slaps." This is definitely one of the best shoegaze releases I've heard lately. Blazing psychedelic leads at times and more relaxed and chill songs back up their claim to be "stargaze rock'n roll", as opposed to just another band adopting the shoegaze moniker.
One of the things I find interesting about them (and I don't say this to be tokenizing or suggest that it's a some sort of gimmick) is that unlike a number of rock bands with women as members, only one of the three members is a male and he's the bassist. It's often the inverse of that. They're also not props or "eye candy," as some jaded and misogynistic rock elitists might dismiss them as. All three members are very talented at their instruments and the songs are very solid, warranting multiple plays. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. I have pretty high standards with this sort of music and I strongly recommend it. Especially if you like GALAXIE 500, RED HOUSE PAINTERS, and early Verve
