SULFURIC CAUTERY- "Chainsaws Clogged With The Underdeveloped Brain Matter of Xenophobes" LP

Image
Finally got to actually LISTEN to the new SULFURIC CAUTERY full length (which is also their first) and am COMPLETELY blown away. This blows away all their other recordings and sets a new bar for grindcore and extreme music in general. I have never heard so much PING in my life and I don't know what adjectives would do how intense it is justice. It was actually physically tiring, despite being only twenty minutes long. The last album I felt THIS exhausted after listening to was Disgorge (Mexico)'s "Forensick". As for the quality of the music, I like this album more than Last Days of Humanity. That's something I never thought I'd be able to say about a grind band, but I just did and these guys live only an hour north of me. Aside from this one song, the audio has yet to hit the internet and it's only on vinyl so far.  CD version comes out next month. SLOW GLOWS - Stargaze Rock'n Roll LP (2019)

Image
The term "hard-working band" isn't always appreciated as a descriptor for a band, but I think that it's apt in the case of SLOW GLOWS.  They've been going for three or four years, steadily growing and building upon their sound.  After some EP's, two 7"s, and a live release, this is their first proper full-length (which is also available on vinyl).  And as the kids say today, "it slaps."  This is definitely one of the best shoegaze releases I've heard lately.  Blazing psychedelic leads at times and more relaxed and chill songs back up their claim to be "stargaze rock'n roll", as opposed to just another band adopting the shoegaze moniker. One of the things I find interesting about them (and I don't say this to be tokenizing or suggest that it's a some sort of gimmick) is that unlike a number of rock bands with women as members, only one of the three members is a male and he's the bassist.  It's often the inve...

RALPH - Speculatory Ether Crib (Newest release)

Image
This is one of the best releases to come out of Cincinnati this year. The reclusive solo artist who goes by the moniker "Ralph" continues what they were doing before. Which is best described as ROBERT JOHNSON-by-way-of-DANIEL JOHNSTON. These are some recordings that were laying around, but the production is better, which adds to the sound . It's rare that a project known for sounding lo-fi would improve when it does that, but they pulled it off! I quite strongly recommend getting this. By the way, it's "Name Your Price", so if you're low on cash, you can still get it. Or at least stream it a bunch. https://ralphkralph.bandcamp.com/album/speculatory-ether-crib

BLIGHTS (New No-Wave/Post Punk From Colombia, Missouri)

Image
There's a new band from Colombia, Missouri that you should all check out.  It's no-wave post punk with a spaghetti western feel.  There are three singles on bandcamp, two of which have lyrics up.  One sounds like it's about someone lying about sexual assault and all of the abuser's friends and acquaintances taking their side.  Another is about barriers between people and divisions within ourselves.  I found the lyrics to be incisive and insightful.  They sent me an additional track that's not available for public consumption yet, but will be on the upcoming album and it really impressed me.  Look out for these folks...  By the way, they have former members of NEW TONGUES and ENEMY AIRSHIP.  Recommended if you like PINK TURNS BLUE, JOY DIVISION, and AU PAIRS.
